Job Summary:

The purpose of this post is to provide a holistic assessment of families and offer single or multi-agency coordinated packages of support. The Senior Parent Support Advisor will empower families to identify and tackle challenging behaviours, reduce negative family relationships, securing a positive pathway for improvement, with particular emphasis upon increasing educational attendance, attainment and reduce exclusions by:

  • Working in partnership with families offering listening, advice and guidance to develop and enhance parenting skills.
  • Delivering evidence-based parenting programmes to a defined client group.
  • Completing initial assessments using the Early Help Framework and make appropriate referrals to other services.
  • Taking on the role of the Lead Professional, co-ordinating services in the Team Around the Family (TAF) acting as the single point of contact, when required. To work in partnership with relevant professionals in statutory and non-statutory organisations.
  • Supporting families who do not meet the thresholds that trigger the involvement of specialist services.

The post holder will work in partnership with the family to identify, broker and secure appropriate services to meet identified need, as well as providing direct support to schools to embed early help processes.


Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):

  • To carry a complex caseload and key work with families who are referred for support taking on the lead professional role to coordinate a multi-agency whole family approach to address difficulties.
  • To undertake whole family assessments ensuring a high standard of service to families, including securing the services of other agencies.
  • To review action plans regularly and coordinate activity to ensure agreed tasks are identified and goals reached in a timely manner.
  • To ensure that the service provided is delivered at times that suit and meet the needs of the families e.g. early mornings, late evenings and weekends.
  • To work in partnership with social workers to effectively step-down cases to the Parent Support Service thus reducing social care caseloads.
  • To attend case conferences and Court as and when required.
  • To work with all family members using parenting contracts where appropriate.
  • To use a range of assessment tools such as the Family Star and mechanisms to identify the support needs of families including the Enfield Early Help Form (EHF) to identify additional needs and organise and secure support as required. Applying solution focussed techniques to help effect change.
  • To contribute to the team learning and development activities, participate in individual and annual appraisal meetings.
  • To review barriers to participation for parents and demonstrate strategies to support parents to overcome these.
  • To maintain accurate and detailed case documentation files with evidence of decision-making processes and statutory safeguarding actions recorded in relevant IT systems.
  • Follow Child Protection and Safeguarding procedures, alerting respective seniors accordingly to any risk issues that may arise including personal safety and safety of others.
  • Lead on the delivery of accredited parent programmes.
  • Participate in a duty rota system, which includes being responsible directly for and be accountable for taking referrals from families, offering telephone advice, and answering queries by face-to-face contact. Including offering guidance to other professionals/services.
  • Be supportive of different working practices and value equality and diversity.
  • Collate data particularly parental feedback to continuously evaluate and develop the Service.
  • Any other duties reasonably requested by management.
  • Carry out all accountabilities in compliance with the Council's Policies and Procedures.

Skills/Experience:

  • To have a minimum of 2 years' experience of direct work with children's young people and their families in the family home or in the community.
  • Experience of working effectively in co-operation and partnership with a range of communities, partner agencies, private sector bodies, public agencies, voluntary bodies and statutory agencies appropriate to the service area.
  • Proven ability to work with young people, adults and families who have multiple and complex needs with the ability to complete family assessments and draw up and review contracts and intervention strategies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work assertively to achieve sustainable and positive change. Including negotiation and problem solving in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Ability to keep accurate records, organise, plan and coordinate work and proficient use of IT systems e.g. Outlook, MS Office and electronic case management systems.
  • Experience of working with complex case reviews such as multi-agency professional meetings e.g. Multi Agency Panels, Safeguarding or TAFs (teams around the family).
  • Trained to deliver accredited parenting programmes.
  • Knowledge of early help and integrated services.
  • Knowledge of the parenting issues and vulnerabilities.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection legislation.
  • Awareness of the strategies that can be used to empower change within families.
  • Knowledge of accredited parenting programmes.
